First Day of School January 1958
This is Michele Wallace and Barbara Wallace about to enter the Riverside Drive School for the first time. It was January and cold. My grandmother Mme. Willi Posey took this picture, and delivered us on the first day. I was now 6 and could enter the First grade, of which I only had half a year. Up until then Posey (I called her Momma Jones) was my teacher. Because of this I was far in advance of the other students in my class, was very impatient and made up homework. As a consequence, we were switched from this school to the Modern School, which was all black and not satisfactory either, and then finally Our Savior Lutheran School in the Bronx in January of 1959 where we remained for 5 years. We went there on the advice of a friend of my mother's, Julie, who taught at Our Savior. Her son, Nickey, who was a few years older than us, also attended Our Savior, and sometimes delivered us home from school, since we all lived in closed proximity.
